Formatting Custom Checkout Questions in Zapier

Written by Benjamin Lazarov

Origin integrates with Zapier to allow you to connect your Origin account with over 5,000 different apps and platforms. Because Origin sends so much data through Zapier, we think it's easier to clean up the formatting of some of the raw data so you can integrate it more easily into your apps. Before getting started with anything we explain here, you'll want to make sure you have already set up your Zapier integration.

If you want to clean up some data formatting, we recommend that you use Zapier's "Formatter" action directly below your Origin trigger. Formatter allows you to clean up different kinds of data in different ways. In this example, we'll look at data where there could be multiple results, like Checkout Questions and Answers. The Event we'll use in Formatter for this example is Utilities.

Utilities allows us to select options of different data types and formats. For this example, you'll want to use Line-Item to Text.

Once you select the data type to transform, you will choose the Input, or actual data, you want to change. This is where you select the data sent from Origin.

After selecting your Input, you will need to enter the Separator that the raw Origin data uses. In our case, it is a comma. You will want to enter , into this field.

This is where some magic happens. Zapier will look at the data and how it has combined multiple items but still separated by commas. Zapier will then separate everything the commas break up, giving you cleaner data. As you can see below, the data included in this endpoint is grouped together in one long string even though it includes multiple different items. We need these to be separated if we want to use this data in creative ways.

With the help of the Formatter step, we now have clean data that is all broken apart into individual pieces rather than one long string.

We can now use these individual pieces of data in other apps. For example, you can input all of the checkout questions and answers from bookings into a spreadsheet, send a custom text or email containing an important answer to a question, and more.

When adding your data to another step, you'll see the Formatter option to choose from. In the last Zapier article, we only selected data from the Origin trigger, but here you'll want to use the Formatter option to select the newly formatted data.

You can add multiple Formatter steps if you want to clean up other data endpoints. In this example, we just selected the Checkout Questions. We would need to add another Formatter step if we were to clean up the Answers the customers gave.

Have fun!
