The Difference Between Private, Public, & Custom Adventure Types

Understand when to use Private, Public, or Custom adventure types — and how to avoid common double-booking mistakes.

Written by Benjamin Lazarov

When adding listings to your Schedule, you'll choose whether each availability slot is Private, Public, or tied to a Custom listing. Here's what each one means and when to use it.

Quick reference:

Private — One booking per date. Closes automatically after the first booking. Best for private/exclusive trips.

Public — Multiple bookings allowed until all seats are filled. Best for group tours, courses, and open-enrollment trips.

Custom — Only people with a Booking Access Link can book. Best for special groups or private arrangements.

Private (Default)

By default, everything you add to the calendar is Private unless you check the Public box. Private means that as soon as one booking is made for that time slot, it closes and becomes unavailable for anyone else to book. This is best suited for private group trips where you only want one party at a time.

Public

When you check Public, the time slot stays open for bookings until all seats are filled. As many customers can book as there are spots available. This is ideal for group tours, courses, and any trip where multiple parties can join the same departure.

Common Mistake: Double-Bookings or Dates Not Closing After a Booking

If a customer books a date but it keeps showing as available on your website, your trip is most likely set to Public when it should be Private. Public trips stay open until every seat is filled — so if Max Seats is set to 10 and only 1 person booked, the date will remain bookable for 9 more.

To fix it: go to Schedule, click the date in question, and uncheck the Public checkbox to switch it back to Private.

Custom

If you are creating a listing for only a specific person or group, select the Custom option in the listing settings. Custom listings are only bookable by people who have a Booking Access Link — they won't appear publicly on your website.

Custom listings can also be set to Public or Private on the Schedule:

  • Custom + Private — Only one person with the Booking Access Link can make a single booking. Best when one person is paying for an entire group.

  • Custom + Public — Multiple people with the Booking Access Link can each book their own individual spot until all seats are filled. Best when everyone in the group is paying separately.

Both Private and Public schedule slots are visible on your public website. Custom listings are the only type that is hidden from public view.
