Connecting Origin to QuickBooks

Sync your bookings from Origin with your Quickbooks account

Written by Benjamin Lazarov

With Origin's new QuickBooks integration, you can save even more time by automating bookkeeping tasks. Your office manager and accountant will thank you!

This integration works by sending your booking data contained in bank payouts over to QuickBooks as Bank Transactions. You'll be able to pick which accounts inside QuickBooks you want this data entered into.

Heads up!

Origin only provides the integration to QuickBooks. Origin is not an accountant, nor do we provide accounting or bookkeeping services. It is best to work with an accountant if you have questions about how to set up your QuickBooks account and how you want to recognize your revenues.

Connect Your Origin Account to Quickbooks

In your Origin account, navigate to Integrations in the sidebar menu. You'll find a green button to connect Origin to QuickBooks.

When you're ready, you'll be prompted to sign into your QuickBooks account which will establish the connection.

Configuring The Integration

When the accounts are connected, you'll be redirected to a page where you can manage the integration. Before continuing, you need to complete two quick steps:

  1. Select an account where the main Bank Transaction deposits will go. The Account Type you can choose for this can be the following:

    • Bank, Other Current Asset

  2. Select an account where the individual transactions (aka "Line Items") will go. The Account Type you can choose can be the following:

    • Income, Other Income, Expense, Other Expense, Other Current Assets, Equity, COGS

This is where you might need your accountant! They'll tell you what accounts you should select based on your accounting practices.

If you want to make custom Rules to organize these transactions in particular ways, select the main Bank Account you have already connected to QuickBooks for Deposits. That way, all your payouts from Origin will go to the same feed as your Bank account, and you can customize this further with Rules. If you do not select your main bank account, the Deposits will still go into an account, but you may not be able to customize these with Rules (QuickBooks only lets you add Rules to Bank Feeds).

To get back to this page to change the accounts, refresh, or disconnect the integration, go to the Integrations tab in the sidebar menu.

Incoming Payouts

You can get a preview of what bookings your payouts contain by logging directly into Stripe, which is the payment processor Origin uses. You can click on Balances in the top menu, and you will see how much money is in your Stripe Balance now, how much will be paid out in the future, and what is currently in transit to your bank. When a payout hits your bank, that is when Origin will send the data to QuickBooks.

You can click on the individual payouts to see what bookings they contain.

Inside Your QuickBooks Account

The functionality of your QuickBooks account will remain the same after the integration. To see the Bank Transactions sent over by Origin, click the account you chose for them to be entered into. That will show you a complete list of all the transactions inside of that account.

When your QuickBooks account receives data on a new payout, it will be entered into the accounts you chose. There are a few different places you can view this information. One is in your register for the particular account the payouts are going to. This will show you the total amount in that deposit from the payout.

If you want to see what transactions are contained in that deposit, you can click on the deposit you want and then click Edit. This will show you the description of the transactions like the Listing that was booked, Customer, amount of Seats, and Date. We'll also tell you whether or not there's been a refund, which would be a negative amount.

You can see these transactions and descriptions in a few different places in your QuickBooks account. For example, you will see this information in Reports.

Please let us know how you are enjoying this integration and if there are any other features you would like to see added to make the Origin x QuickBooks integration stronger!
