Adding More Guide Category Permissions To Guide More Trips

How to update guide categories so guides can be assigned to additional listing types.

Written by Benjamin Lazarov

Categories are how Origin connects guides to listings. When you add a new listing category to your company, you also need to assign that category to any guide who should be eligible to lead it. Without a matching category, a guide won't be assigned to that listing type — and the listing won't show as bookable if no guides have the matching category.

Updating a Guide's Categories

Whether you're updating your own categories as an admin-guide or updating categories for someone on your team, the process is the same:

  1. In the left sidebar, click Guides, then select Manage.

  2. Find the guide you want to update and click the lock icon in the Edit Permissions column.

  3. In the Edit guide permissions modal, click the Categories field and select any new categories from the dropdown. You can add as many as needed.

  4. Click Update to save the changes.

If you're the admin and also guide your own trips: Your name will appear in the Guides → Manage list. You still need to assign yourself categories — your admin role does not automatically make you eligible to guide any listing type.

Don't Forget: Display on Public Pages

In the same Edit guide permissions modal, there is a Display on Public Pages toggle. This must be enabled for a guide to count toward availability on your public booking widget. If a guide has the right categories but this toggle is off, they won't affect what customers see as bookable.

If your listings are set up correctly but trips aren't showing as available, check this setting for all guides assigned to that listing's category.

Lead Guide Categories

If you use the Lead Guide feature, there is a separate Lead Guide Categories field in the same modal. Assigning a guide to a regular Category does not automatically make them a Lead Guide. You need to explicitly assign Lead Guide Categories if that feature is part of your workflow.

See Lead Guide Functionality for more details.
